Sheffield’s children’s hospital are hosting live music events to help improve the wellbeing of children.

The new musical project took live music to babies and their families for a week to help boost their mental health and uplift spirits at the hospital.

The hospital is keen to advertise that the play team is an integral part in not only bringing joy to the hospital- but helping reduce anxiety and distract young people when having procedures or treatments with them.

When approached for comment the Hospital’s receptionist said: “It’s moments like that, that makes all the hard work we put into the hospital worthwhile.”

“Many of the events were organised by the play team, who love to make sure that all of the patients in the hospital have the opportunity to express themselves through play and music.”

A mother on Facebook who posted about the music event said: “I thought it was great. Being in hospital can be awfully dull and scary, so to have this kind of music was amazing.

“It made our stay so much more enjoyable and my daughter loved it.”

Project founder, Polly Ives arranged for a mix of musicians, such as Harpist Louise Thompson and BBC Radio 2’s Bella Hardy.

When asked to give a statement regarding the event, the Hospital Press Office talked of the success they have had, and said that the project was funded by a grant from Sheffield’s Sarah Nutly Power of Music Foundation.

They said: “Parents said the music helped their babies to sleep or even to take a peek at the world around them for the first time.”

Parents welcomed the performances as a way to soothe their children or to ‘brighten their day’ while staying in hospital.

The programme was tailor made for babies utilising sound-healing instruments such as Koshi Chimes, sound-bowl and rain sticks to create a relaxing baby- friendly environment.

The hospital project is to be repeated later this year and organisers are hoping to bring the musical project to other groups and communities in the local areas and surrounding.
