A man is due to appear in court today after being charged in connection with a major police incident in Sheffield earlier this week.

47-year-old Yaqub Younis was charged with affray, communicating false information with a bomb hoax, intentionally/recklessly causing a public nuisance, and criminal damage last night, South Yorkshire Police have confirmed.

“On Monday just after 7pm, we responded to an incident concerning a man inside a property on Broad Street, alleged to be in possession of weapons and posing a risk.” a spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said.

Following this, police put a large cordon in place, closing Broad Street and the Sheffield Parkway for the protection of the public whilst specialist armed police officers carried out work in the area.

The cordon was gradually reduced in scale over the 36-hour period, with Younis eventually being arrested early on Wednesday 12 February.

He is due to appear in Sheffield Magistrates’ Court later today, February 14.
