With Doncaster’s annual Big Spring Clean taking place between the 13th and 29th of March, organisers have insisted this year’s campaign will be the best yet.

Portfolio holder for Environment, Housing and Safer Communities, Cllr Gyln Jones highlighted the impact of the scheme. He noted that 7,700 miles of roads across Doncaster had been covered previously.

Cllr Jones said Spring Cleans in previous years have represented the strength of community spirit and willingness of volunteers to give their time freely throughout Doncaster.

He said: “They don’t have to do it; they simply want to make a difference to their community.”

Cllr Jones believes the campaign not only benefits the physical environment tremendously but also plays a major role in building lasting connection within the community.

Cllr Jones praised the dedication of long standing volunteers in Hexthorpe Park.

He said: “Many of them are older residents, but they have such a strong sense of community and pride.

“They want everyone to enjoy a cleaner, greener, nicer environment. That’s really what it’s all about.”

Despite the majority of volunteers being older residents in previous years, Cllr Jones said more and more young people are engaging.

Speaking about youth involvement, he said: “It is about encouraging them to make a difference where they live. If you can build that energy and sense of responsibility when they’re young, it carries forward as they grow up.”

Doncaster Council are providing litter pickers, collection bags and hi-vis vests for volunteers.

Cllr Jones said expanding awareness and improving access to equipment will attract even more volunteers, as he encouraged people to engage in Doncaster’s tight-knit community.

He said: “It’s great fun, for a start.

“You’re making a visible difference to your community.”
