Nature enthusiasts and foraging newbies are gathering this Sunday to celebrate national mushroom hunting day.

The day was created to encourage people to get outdoors, explore their local woodlands and connect over learning about what they may find.

Foraging expert, James Hill, said: “Foraging is a great way to connect with nature and to learn about the plants and mushrooms around you.

“You may not want to actively forage but what you learn through the process is amazing and it can make just a walk so much more interesting.”

Some mushrooms to look out for include the Saint Georges day mushroom, chicken of the woods and jelly ear.

In Sheffield, the recent damp weather would have helped these mushrooms thrive, making them more common to spot in forests, mossy areas and at the bases of trees.
