Sheffield’s longest-serving councillor has been named as the city’s new Lord Mayor.

Andrew Sangar MBE has served on the council since 1991 and he becomes the Sheffield’s 129th Lord Mayor.

At Sheffield Town Hall, earlier today, councillors unanimously appointed Councillor Sangar, who is a member of the Liberal Democrats and represents Fulwood.

He was previously the deputy Lord Mayor and has held a number of positions on the council, including being chair of the performance review committee, cabinet member for children’s services and the environment and chair of south west local area committee.

In his first speech as Lord Mayor, he said: “Sheffield has a fantastic future ahead of it. It’s going to be a big year ahead.”

He replaced Councillor Safiya Saeed, who was Sheffield’s first black muslim woman to serve as Lord Mayor.
