Members of an amateur Sheffield football team have been put through their paces taking part in a 50-mile challenge while raising money for the Sheffield Children’s hospital.
The senior team and under 18’s of Sheffield Park Rangers football club have been using their spare time wisely in lockdown, participating in a tough individual challenge while raising money for charity.
The football club that is only in its second year of existence is doing its bit to heal its community with every member of the club, including the committee, taking part in this run.
Jimmy Collins, the manager of the senior team and fundraiser of the campaign, said: “The purpose of this is to keep everyone fit and active during lockdown but help out to charity in the process.
“We needed to do something because when you take a livelihood away from somebody for so long it can be tough as football can help people get away from certain pressures”.
Local football teams have been unable to play since November due to the third lockdown pausing all elite sport.
This has caused more disruption to the club, with them only having played around two months of football within a 12-month period. This challenge is giving the players a purpose.
The chairman of the community-based, non-profitable club, Andy Twyford, said: “During this pandemic, charities have been affected by a lack of funds and we want to give something back to a cause that has not only helped our players in their lives, it has helped some of our players’ kids and the children in our community as a whole. They are the future of our community”.
The club previously raised over £1,300 for NHS and the Sheffield Hospitals in May running 100 miles in a similar challenge but have now decided to do it again for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
Uriah D Rennie, chair of the FA, said: “It is wonderful to see that our clubs, players and participants are doing such wonderful things”.
To help Jimmy Collins and Sheffield Park Rangers in this amazing fundraising mission.
