Laptop For Kids have joined forces with South Yorkshire to buy nearly 7,000 devices for children.
Dell Technologies have given the charity laptops to help provide for children who are unable to attend school remotely during the pandemic.
Before, local residents in Sheffield were encouraged to donate unused electronic devices for underprivileged children.
Technology entrepreneur and co founder of the campaign, David Richards, said: “We applaud local government leaders in South Yorkshire for stepping up to meet the need and invest in the next generation of successful young people.”
The campaign was launched in Sheffield in response to the number of children who were unable to take part in online lessons within South Yorkshire.
Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield Council are working together with schools to help distribute these devices across their local communities.
Mr Richards, said: “Children must be able to safely access technology at home so they can keep up with their education and develop digital skills for the future.”
Youths in the Sheffield City Region have been hit hard by COVID-19, with many experiencing almost a year of disruption to their learning.
By Rotherham council teaming up with Laptop for Kids, 500 more laptops have been provided for children in Rotherham, bringing the total of number of children receiving a laptop for remote learning, to more than 2000.
Mother and freelance journalist, Mel Hart, said: “Not everyone is properly equipped for online learning, especially if you have more than just one child who needs to access remote learning at the same time.”
AESSEAL, a global manufacturing group located in Rotherham, have helped connect 10,000 households to the internet by donating £100,000 dongles. The local employer have also donated a total of 2,000 laptops to help local school children.
