Climate group urges people to attend Sheffield Environment Hustings this week

Sheffield Climate Alliance are urging people to attend the Sheffield City Council Elections Environment Hustings throughout the week.

The climate-focused events are being held online and there are six meetings, giving people the chance to ask their local candidates questions before choosing who to vote for on 6 May.

Each event will focus on a different constituency, with South East Sheffield, Stocksbridge & Ecclesfield, Heeley, Central, Hallam and Brightside & Hillsborough being covered throughout the week.

A spokesperson from SCA said: “A hustings is basically an opportunity for citizens and communities to ask questions to their local candidates before choosing who to vote for.”

“The events are supported by a number of organisations that come under the Sheffield Climate Alliance banner.

“We are not affiliated with any particular party, and we act as a ‘critical friend’ to the Council, which basically means we provide support and guidance on environmental and social issues.”

Sheffield Friends of the Earth, Green New Deal South Yorkshire, Sheffield Greenpeace and Sheffield Green Parents are just a few of the organisations who come under the SCA banner.

“It is important to remember that we partner with lots of different organisations, from business networks to arts and culture groups,” SCA added.

“We think it is important that community is central to tackling the climate crisis.”

Green energy, public transport, waste & recycling are some of the issues that will be discussed at the hustings events, with each party nominating a local candidate to represent their views and their approaches to meeting the climate and nature emergencies.

If attendees are not able to make their local meeting, they are encouraged to attend another even if they do not live in that constituency.
