A major Sheffield student accommodation experienced a 10 hour water and power outage affecting hundreds of boarding students and posed possible safety risks.
Vita Student, one of largest student apartments has been described by some students as one of the best campus accommodations in Sheffield.
However, In the past three months, there have been three power and water outages, affecting residents’ lives and their studies. This has created a lot of inconvenience for apartment residents.
Jason Liu, 24, a student resident said: “I was revising my thesis when all of a sudden there was a power outage, followed by no water coming out of the tap. I was told by the apartment that it would take over 9 hours to repair the fault.”
Some other residents expressed anger and alarm at the safety hazard.
Yue Shi, 21, a student who lives on the tenth floor of the apartment said: “I think it’s really dangerous. If I was in when the power went out, I can’t imagine the consequences – I live on a high floor.”
Yue recalled that the corridors of the entire apartment were pitch-black at the time, and it was difficult to avoid hitting some hard walls without using a flashlight.
“I moved in because I was told this apartment was rated as the best, but it’s the third time in just three months that it has had this kind of long-term accident and many of our residents feel that this is unfair and a fraud.”
In response to the accident, Vita’s official reception stated that they apologize for the inconvenience caused by the power outage and are sorting the repair as soon as possible. However, compensation has not yet been discussed.
At present, the student residents of this apartment have jointly submitted complaints and feedback to various apartment supervision platforms.
They hope to get a reasonable explanation and some compensation.
