A Junior Sheffield ice skating team say it would “mean so much” if they were to win first place at an international skating competition in the city.

Perpetuum will be competing in the top category of Steel City Trophy for the first time this weekend at the IceSheffield arena in Sheffield.

Maddie Clark, 18, who is a co-captain for the team, said: “We’ve seen the teams we’re skating against and they’re absolutely incredible.

“For us to win we would be so shocked and happy because it would mean so much to us.”

Synchronised ice skating is a sport involving 8 to 20 skaters performing together on ice.

The aim is for the team to move around the ice as one flowing unit whilst completing different sets of dances, formations and footwork.

Miss Clark said: “I love doing the routines and I love performing with everyone.

“With synchronised skating you work as a team and I really like the feel that I get when I work with everyone.”

The team have previously won a bronze medal in their skating competition in Scotland and placed 5th in the 2022 Skate London event.

The junior Perpetuum team have been performing in the B team division and are competing with the A team groups for the 1st time today.

Mollie Mellor, the coach for the junior team, said: “I feel pretty confident in my team.

“We’ve done a few competitions this season and our scores have gotten higher throughout.”

The team has been training every Sunday morning from 5:30-10 and every other Thursday morning 6-7.

Grace Naylor, 17, who is a member of the team, said: “I like the social side of synchronised skating because you get to travel up and down the country with your friends.

“Having nights together and doing each other’s makeup and just growing up together really it’s just fun.”

This is their last competition of the season.

Miss Clark said: “We just want to go into every competition with a positive mindset, have fun and just be ourselves on the ice.”

“If we win something we win something, if we don’t we don’t but at least we’ve done the best we can.”

Icicles Junior team in Nottingham was the previous winner in the Steel City’s Trophy 2022.

The competition has entries from Great Britain, Australia and Canada.

Performances from today will include entries from the mixed age, adult masters, juvenille, junior and senior groups.
