National Highways has confirmed a crane has caught fire.

The incident has led to around four miles of congestion on the M1 northbound.

National Highways have said to allow extra journey time and use alternative routes where possible.

Travel South Yorkshire have said they expect the motorway closure to remain in place for ‘several hours’, and that surrounding areas will ‘feel the brunt of the traffic’.

South Yorkshire Fire have said they are working with Derbyshire Fire Service to tackle the fire as quickly as possible.

There are currently five fire engines on scene, trying to tackle it.
