A University of Sheffield alumni has raised over £2,000 for the university as he hikes from Manchester all the way to Sheffield
Thomas Wright, a Sheffield Alumni, is hiking the 70km distance between the two cities to raise money for scholarships and bursaries at the university.
So far he has raised £2020, he has a goal of raising £2500 by the end of the hike. He has already modified his goal three times after originally aiming to raise £1,200.
Mr Wright said: “The current cost of living has exacerbated a situation that already provides significant concerns to applicants and students, and these have motivated me to fundraise. I want to actively make a difference at a time when financial support is needed more than ever.”
The money raised will be enough to fund an entire scholarship for a disadvantaged student and also a bursary. He knows how important this money can be as he himself had one when he studied here and said it allowed him to make the most of his time at the university.
Mr Wright will be joined by his Mum, Mary Smith, for the last 30km of the hike.
She has already donated £100, and said: “See you in Edale for the final 20 miles – you are amazing!”
He hopes that by doing this hike he will be able to help give more talented people the chance to benefit from a University of Sheffield education.
