People all across Sheffield will be making their way to the polling stations today, to have their say in the local elections. However, this year introduces one crucial difference.

These elections will be the first where in order to vote in person, you will need to present a valid form of photo identification, otherwise you will be turned away.

The government unveiled these restrictions in an attempt to clamp down on voter fraud, but the plans have been met with mixed reviews.

Some candidates in Sheffield are worried that it will decrease voter turnout, with Green Party candidate Dylan Lewis-Cresser saying they think the legislation will “disenfranchise a lot of people from voting”.
