The Ethel Trust Barge charity, based on Sheffield’s Quayside, has acquired a new boat.
The charity recently received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service for their work, and are now expanding with their new boat, Pearl.
The charity takes autistic children and adults along the canal.
Their aim is to allow those on the fringes of society to get involved with driving the boat, having a day out of school and enjoying the bank’s views.
Their main barge is now 30 years old, so the new one has come just in time to expand their accessibility to accommodate more people.
The new boat is wider than the original, making it more accessible for those with disabilities.
We spoke to volunteers who run the charity and their plan for the weekend with Ukrainian refugee mothers and children.
