Sewage is entering Britain’s waterways at alarming rates and it’s especially bad in Sheffield.

Data from the Environment Agency revealed that sewage was dumped into Sheffield’s rivers 2,909 times, or about 8,700 hours last year, which means there were only 60 hours last year where sewage didn’t enter rivers.

Sheffield Labour councillor Minesh Parekh criticised Yorkshire Water, the private water company in charge of water supply in the area, for failing to invest in its infrastructure and causing the spills.

He said: “It is disgraceful that Yorkshire Water have overseen the managed decline of our public infrastructure, while at the same time raking in millions for their shareholders.

“The Tory Government are turning our rivers into open sewers – it’s time to dump the Tories instead.”
