Sheffield has been hit by heavy snow which has been falling since early this morning.
The Met Office have issued an amber weather warning, with people being told to expect travel disruption across the Peak District and south Pennines throughout today.
Streets Ahead, a city-wide road maintenance team, have said they have gritted roads in preparation for the snow, with the priority routes being higher ground.
Sheffield City Council has announced that it is gritting ‘priority 1’ routes – the main routes which link Sheffield to motorways and other towns and cities.
The Met Office has said Sheffield can expect to see between 2-5cm of snow up to 200m, with chances of 5-10cm in areas above 200m.
Several schools and colleges in the area have made contingency plans to deal with the adverse conditions. Schools such as Rowan Primary School in Dore, Seven Hills School on Granville Road and Bents Green School on Ringinglow Road were due to open at 10:30am, with Hope Valley College closed for the day.
People have been told to expect disruptions to public transport and travel services. The 772 bus service has been cancelled for the day.
The Met Office has also warned of the possibility of power cuts and mobile phone coverage disruptions. There is a chance of rural communities being temporarily cut off.
