Sheffield has once again been reaccredited with the international award for its night time economy covering culture, eateries and safety.
Shefnews can exclusively reveal today that Sheffield has been awarded with the Purple Flag accreditation by the Association of Town and City Management.
The Purple Flag is an international award that highlights excellence in the evening and night-time economy. It recognises safe and enjoyable places to go for a night out.
Councillor Joe Otten, Chair of the Waste and Street Scene Policy Committee said: “We’re very pleased we’ve been reaccredited for the next year. The teams put a deal of work into it.”
The award is very similar to the Green Flag, which is awarded to green spaces and parks, of which Sheffield has several parks with the recognition.
A physical Purple Flag can be found hanging in the Sheffield Winter Garden alongside the Green Flag awarded to that space.
Sheffield has several initiatives to help with safety in the night time economy.
Coun Otten said: “The things we’ve put in place by working with the businesses, working with the city centre ambassadors, the street pastors, the CCTV operation. They all work together to create a safe place to go and have a good evening out.”
The Purple Flag scheme is run by the Association of Town and City Management and is an international accreditation which focuses on criteria points including personal safety, cleanliness and transport.
Coun Otten said: “It’s great news. It’s a recognition of what we’ve done to create a great place for an evening out.”
