A killer who murdered his ex girlfriend’s new partner has been jailed for life.
Daniel Balazs, 21, stabbed Daniel Micska, 28, in the chest with a 12cm blade around 9pm on August 9 2023.
Detective Inspector Matt Bolger, who led the investigation said: “Balazs claimed he attacked Daniel in self-defence but he turned up outside his home looking for a fight, armed with a knife.
“The incident was caught on CCTV and it was clear that Balazs ran towards the victim. This was not self-defence as he had claimed.”
Balazs, of Heelis Street, Barnsley, who had previously been found in possession of a knife, was confronted by Micska and his cousin after he approached their Newton Street home and whistled.
Upon seeing Daniel Micska, Balazs ran toward him and stabbed him in the chest as he tried to run back into the house.
Daniel’s family and neighbours fought hard to save his life, but he was pronounced dead at 9.42pm that same evening.
Balazs ran away and travelled to London after the attack, where he was eventually arrested and charged by police.
After a plea of “not guilty”, the jury at Sheffield Crown Court took 50 minutes to deliberate before finding Balazs guilty of murder and was jailed for a minimum of 20 years.
Daniel’s brother has paid tribute to the 28-year-old and said : “Daniel was a loving brother and father, and when he died, he left behind two young children, who I now have to watch grow up without their dad.
“Although this verdict will not bring back my brother, I would like to thank those involved in bringing justice for Daniel and for the support they have offered throughout the investigation.”
