The National Videogame Museum (NVM) is bringing a whole new experience for visitors this February. Located in the heart of Sheffield, it has announced the opening of a ground-breaking exhibition, “Eyeing Up New Ways To Play”, during schools’ half-term break.

The NVM’s mission is to collect, preserve, exhibit and interpret video games for everyone. This latest showcase promises to redefine the boundaries of interactive entertainment by introducing visitors to cutting-edge gaming technologies and immersive experiences.

Stacey Jubb, the museum’s Head of Learning, said: “The museum has welcomed a lot of children over the half-term break.”

“This exhibition is a great step towards the future of gaming. It’s not just about where we’ve been but where we’re going. We’re thrilled to offer our visitors a special experience with technologies to allow accessibility to all.”

The exhibition is in collaboration with video game charity SpecialEffect, bringing unique Eye Gaze technology, called Eyemine, allowing players to use their eyes to control the game. The accessible technology was designed for individuals with severe disabilities originally. It tracks the player’s eye movements using infrared cameras, simulating the use of a conventional computer mouse.

James Dawson, 43, is a data and AI developer from Derby. He was visiting the museum with his children, said: “Eyemine technology is surprisingly very precise. I found it was very different from what I am used to with Minecraft. But the technology is very impressive.”

The exhibition attracts people from all over the country. Dionne Shaw, 33, is an accountant from Leeds, said: “It is my first time here. The most important thing is the connection you can find in the museum. It is for people of all ages that my son (13) and I can both enjoy our time here.”

“The exhibitions about history and development of games also open up a new view of video games.”.

Louise Scott, 43, an Artist from Newcastle, said: “My son and I are both video game nuts. This museum brings back memories for me and it always a good time.”.

Eyeing Up New Ways To Play” offers a unique glimpse into the future of video games, making it a must-visit event this half-term break in Sheffield. You can learn more about the museum through their website.
