Daniel Sandford, 38, has been helping support animals in Ukraine taking between 20-30 tonnes of aid a month into the warzone with his charity Transport a Sister.

Daniel, who used to live in Sheffield, now Warsaw, has been helping since the fourth day of the war, however had to change the focus of his charity after donations stopped coming in.

He stated, “There aren’t as many people leaving the country anymore, at the beginning you would get this large amount of people coming and panicking because it was a full invasion”.

Transport a Sister started off organising transport for women and children who were pouring into Poland at the start of the war.

This was to take the heat off the reception centres and match them to a family or host in western and southern Europe and later Canada

However, the need for this died down and they changed their focus to humanitarian and animal aid.

Daniel commented “Areas close to the front line are far worse than they were, but donations have stopped”.

Now the charity is bringing 4.5 tonnes of wet cat food to Ukraine and distributing it to places like Slaviansk, Dobropilya, Odessa and elsewhere.

He continued “There is still a lot of aid being collected but there just isn’t any financial donations coming in to facilitate transport”.

Daniel along with others recently bought a Mercedes ML which they will use to transport dog and cat food from Yorkshire all the way to Ukraine before then donating it to the army.

The charity members have had to purchase cars out of their own money because of the decline in donations.

Daniel said “Whether it be by lorries or driving vans most volunteers have run out of their own money”.

The charity is now calling for donations for their latest funding for a vehicle to transport it to one of their friends in Ukraine to carry out drone operations which need lots of heavy-duty equipment.
