Sheffield Cycling 4 All, a project run by Disability Sheffield, is marking National Lottery week with a celebration of inclusivity.

The project offers 12 sessions a week at Hillsborough Park, Monday to Thursday, tailored for adults with disabilities or long-term health conditions who cannot ride a two wheel cycle.

These sessions will be free from March 11 – 14, to thank the National Lottery for being their majority funder for the last 4 years.

Rosemary Hill, one of the project coordinators, said: “We create an environment that means that people aren’t disabled by their surroundings.”

The project believes in the social model of disability, which says a person is disabled by their environment, not their impairment.

She added: “The world needs to be adapted to humans, not the other way round.”

Sheffield Cycling 4 All also does campaign work to reduce the barriers affecting disabled people and those with long-term health conditions.

They would like to see Sheffield become more accessible to Disabled cyclists, as well as generate more awareness that cycling is an option for almost everyone.

Rosemary said: “It’s interesting that people’s perception is that they can’t cycle. We’re here to say we think you can. And here are all the trikes and bikes and amazing cycles we’ve got.”

The project offers a variety of trikes, quad-bikes, tandems and some two-wheelers, to ensure everyone can have a go.

Rosemary added: “If you can’t use your legs we’ve got hand-cycles, if you can’t use your hands we’ve got straps for your feet.

“All these different options where nearly every single person can cycle.”

They are constantly looking for short-term funding to help create opportunities like these and create a community for those who are disabled.
