Barnsley-born former England fast bowler Darren Gough has announced he is stepping down from his role as managing director at Yorkshire County Cricket Club (YCCC).

Gough, who played for Yorkshire for 15 years, took on the role in December 2021, replacing Martyn Moxon in the midst of the Azim Rafiq racism scandal.

In a statement released by Yorkshire, Gough said: “It’s been an absolute honour to work for my boyhood Club over the last two seasons.

“Having stepped in at a very challenging time, we’ve worked hard to steady the ship and develop our cricket department to ensure we can return to the top tier of English cricket.

“In my time here, we have achieved a great deal that I am proud of.”

Initially, Gough arrived on an interim basis, however, had his deal made permanent 11 months later.

In his time at the club, Yorkshire finished ninth in Division One of the County Championship in 2022, and the following summer, finished seventh in Division Two.

Gough was integral in the appointment of new staff, such as head coach Ottis Gibson, the development of the senior men’s squad, as well as shaping the women’s Hundred side Northern Diamonds over the past two years.

Chief executive Stephen Vaughan said: “It’s been an absolute pleasure to work with Darren since taking on this role.

“The contribution he has made to stabilise the Club and drive our playing squads forward has been critical and, I know that, as a Yorkshireman who lives and breathes this Club, he has been very proud to carry out his role.”

Yorkshire begin their 2024 County Championship Division Two campaign on 12 April against Gloucestershire at the Seat Unique Stadium.
