A petition for the installation of water fountains in and around Sheffield parks has been started by a local environmental group.

Sheffield Action on Plastic, a local environmental group focusing on eliminating wasteful plastic use is petitioning Sheffield City Council to install water fountains to combat single-use plastics.

This is part of a broader campaign by the organisation to combat unnecessary plastic use and promote reusability in Sheffield life.

The organisation, in addition to practical services like cup hires, also organises and convenes numerous plastic-free markets – the first of their kind in Sheffield – to show the availability and potential of plastic alternatives and reusables.

The market received strong reviews and over 400 visitors and the organisation is hoping to carry this momentum into the petition, which has already received 8 signatures.

Sheffield Action on Plastic founder and Chair Greg Hewitt specified the need to keep advertising the need for more sustainable practices such as reusable cups and water fountains.

Mr Hewitt said: “What we’re trying to do through our work through hiring cups, through coming to our markets, through coming to our stalls and signing our petition is all helping to demonstrate to Sheffield City Council that people do care about this issue.”
