Police have increase patrols in the area surrounding a Sheffield school today following a serious incident which saw three people injured.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, after two women in their 20s and a child were injured with what was reported as a sharp object believed to be broken glass.

The 17- year- old remains in custody after the incident at Birley Academy yesterday morning at 8:50am.

Police are conducting a series of proactive patrols today to reassure the community.

People living near the school have displayed their concerns over the safety in the area.

Birley resident, Mark Harrington, 42, said: ‘It is scary isn’t it, you want to send kids to school, feeling safe and secure.

“You want to worry about how they are doing in class and things like that.

“Schools are meant to be a safe place for children, and it is honestly a shame and quite frightening that an incident like this has happened.

“I mean I know if I was a parent I would be shaken up, you just hope that we don’t see incidents like this ever again really.”

At the scene today, two police officers patrolled each entrance, the visitor entrance and the student entrance.

Assistant chief constable Dan Thorpe delivered a statement outside the school alongside Birley Academy headteacher Victoria Hall.

ACC Thorpe said: “I know this will have been a frightening ordeal for everyone involved.

“Birley is a close-knit community and while these events concluded in a swift arrest, it will no doubt cause ongoing concern.”

He also acknowledged content circulating social media relating to the incident, urged people to refrain from posting images, footage and social media, as it would be harmful for their investigation.

He added: “Our officers will remain here in Birley for the rest of today and in the coming days. If you are worried or would like to discuss what has happened with the police, please do not hesitate to approach them. We are here for you to make sure you feel safe in your local area.”

South Yorkshire Police is encouraging anybody with concerns or queries to speak to officers while they are out and about in the Birley area.
