Sheffield students supporting Palestine have protested after violent clashes broke out in US campus protests.

Hundreds of students protested outside the Student Union building on Western Bank to show solidarity with Palestine.

The Sheffield Campus Coalition for Palestine (SCCP), organised the protest against allegations of their university’s complicity in Israeli apartheid.

A spokesperson from the University of Sheffield, said: “We support the right of our students to express their views peacefully, and planned campus activities will continue as normal.

“We also want to remind our students of the behavioural expectations around protests and that racism, antisemitism or Islamophobia will not be tolerated.”

Dr Mike Thelwall, a Professor at the Information School, said: “There is a university investment in entitled weapons manufacturing, which I don’t agree with.”

The day started with students walking out of lectures, followed by a demonstration and a teach-out session.

Dr Lisa Stampnitzky, a Politics Lecturer, said: “There was a session where leadership came to speak to students who wanted to talk about ethics. The ethics team of the University were not able to speak to the leadership, and they are still asking to do that.”

The encampment continued with a Jummah prayer gathering today at 1.30pm.
