An emergency services themed family fun day is being held on one of Sheffield’s most popular shopping streets this week.

The Moor will be taken over by the event on Sunday 12 May between 11am and 4pm.

Local and national groups  will take over one of the city’s most popular shopping streets for the day.

Among the organisations taking part is the National Emergency Services Museum, a Sheffield-based museum and charity which aims to support the emergency services.

Matt Wakefield, the Chief Executive of the National Emergency Services Museum and Event Organiser, said: “The event is an opportunity to showcase vehicles that aren’t normally on display from the museum, and also to showcase the work the lifesaving work that the emergency services do.”

While the National Emergency Services Museum will be showcasing historical vehicles, visitors to the day can expect to see a wide range of vehicles from across the emergency services, including Prison Vans, Blood Bikes and vehicles from the South Yorkshire Transport Museum.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue will be exhibiting operational fire engines, while South Yorkshire Police will be showing off police cars and drones- there will even be the opportunity to get fingerprints taken.

There will also be the opportunity to interact with serving members of the emergency services to talk to them about their experiences and to ask questions.

Mr Wakefield said that the museum will be raising money for itself during the day as they are a charity, and that they will also be raising money for emergency services such as the RNLI and Mountain Rescue.

Speaking in a press release, Lee Appleton, Centre Manager for The Moor, said: “We are overjoyed to bring the ever-popular 999 Fun Day back to The Moor for another year. This event was so well received last year, as it had been in previous years, and we look forward to further success as more people get involved in this day of free fun.”

Mr Wakefield said that the event has been going for around six or seven years, apart from during the pandemic when it did not take place due to restrictions.
