South Yorkshire Ecofit was established in November 2023 with an ambitious effort to drive the region towards net zero emissions. In partnership with Sheffield’s Festival of Debate, they hosted a workshop aimed at revolutionising the retrofitting process.

The event “Rethinking Retrofit: Communities, Construction & You,” took place at the Central United Reform Church on 7 May. It focused on engaging communities and the construction industry to rethink housing, integrate retrofitting, foster community-led approaches, reshape construction practices, build local skills, and develop a circular economy.

The organisation’s strategy focuses on changing the traditional relationship homeowners have with their living spaces, advocating for a shift towards building designs that are both energy-efficient and economically viable.

Dave Berry, the director of South Yorkshire Ecofit, said: “By delivering retrofit projects, we aim to bring South Yorkshire closer to net zero, foster community wealth building, and develop local skills.”

By promoting a circular economy, South Yorkshire Ecofit is not just looking at environmental benefits but is also aiming to develop local skills and create new job opportunities within the community.
