Pro Palestine protestors gathered outside Sheffield Town hall as the new Lord Mayor was sworn in.

Councillor Jayne Dunn was voted as the new Lord Mayor at Sheffield City Council’s annual general meeting on Wednesday.

The protest outside the building sought to remind the council of their cause and raise awareness with the general public.

They seek to raise awareness of the war in Gaza and the suffering experienced by Palestinians.

Sheffield City Council has not yet commented on Wednesday’s protest.

This took place on the 76th anniversary of the Nakba day referring to the Arab-Israeli war and the mass displacement of Palestinian people.

‘Nakba’ is an Arabic term that translates to ‘catastrophe’.

Protesters at the rally said they wanted Palestinians to receive the same treatment as Ukrainian refugees by both local and national government.

This protest came on the same day as a student campaign group began a sit-in at The Diamond, a University of Sheffield building.

Shefnews went down to the rally outside the town hall and spoke with some of the people protesting, including a campaigner with Palestinian heritage.
