Sheffield City Council took ownership of the Adelphi cinema and is intending to turn the building into a new centre for the community.

The council have secured £4 million of government funds for the restoration which would house leisure, arts and music activities.

The old cinema first must be cleared inside and out before any renovations take place.

The first phase is expected to be completed by summer 2026.

The Adelphi opened in 1920 and operated as a cinema for 50 years and survived damage from World War II.

From 2006 to 2013 the building was left vacant and, until present, has been used for storage.

The original design of the outside of the building will be retained throughout the refurbishment, allowing the stunning front to remain.
