The Sheffield Adventure Film Festival is back for its 19th consecutive year to screen 100 of the best adventure films from around the world.
The festival, which is taking place at the Showcase Cinema from the 21st to the 23rd of March, also offers panel discussions, Q&A’s with some of the film-makers, an adventure themed pub quiz and interactive VR experiences.
Matt Heason, the founder and director of the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival was drawn to the city for its climbing in 1996, when he began to offer independent film nights for climbers.

He said: “Shaff’s [Sheffield Adventure Film Festival] been around for 19 years in the Outdoor City. It’s no secret that Sheffield’s really unique, there’s no other city in the world that has such a busy national park.”
He added: “I would class myself as a climber, but I also run, cycle, swim, walk, camp, and all my friends do these different things to varying degrees as well. So it’s nice to come down to the festival and be able to kind of dip your toe into your theme, or go along to the spirit of adventure session, and pick up a bit of a mixed bag.”

Shaff coincides with the Festival of the Outdoors, which celebrates Sheffield being the outdoor city throughout March, featuring numerous sporting events, open air markets and guided walks across the city.
The festival focuses on being environmentally friendly, with visitors encouraged to travel sustainably wherever possible, even the film-makers are urged not to fly to the festival with live streaming taking place instead.
Mr Heason said: “Sustainability is key to everything, it’s really important to highlight these amazing places around the world. A lot of the films will also concentrate on these sustainable messages as well.”
He added: “We want to inspire people to try something new, or to go back to something they used to do, or to make a stand, a lot of the films have a real sense of activism at their heart and calls to action.”
