A teaching assistant from Sheffield has been chosen to represent England’s deaf football team in Denmark.

Will Palmer, 23, is part of a squad that is heading to Copenhagen for two friendlies against Denmark.

Will said: “I think every time I put on the shirt it never gets old, I always have the same feelings as when I was a little kid watching England on the TV.”

The trip will allow younger senior and development squad players with less experience to increase their exposure to playing other international teams.

Will, who lives in Kelham Island said: “I think when I first put on my shirt, it was one of my proudest moments but it was a nightmare debut against America… I think in that game the nerves and emotions took over from my game.”

Andy Palmer, Will’s dad, said: “I feel immense pride in Will and I’m very happy for him and all he has accomplished to be able to play for his country.”

Will currently has 15 England caps after playing in The World Deaf Football Championships in 2023 and The European Deaf Football Championships in 2024.

Will said: “Even though we have quite a young squad and we have developing players, I think we are pretty confident we will win both games.”

He also added: “When I put on the shirt I am always willing to do my best for the team and solidify my place in the squad.”

Will also plays for Kiveton Miners Welfare FC and has scored eight goals in 18 appearances.

Andy said: “It is also extremely nerve-racking watching your child play football against other countries and you really want him to show what he can do.”

Will added: “I think the experiences I get from England helps in mainstream football.

“I think we will definitely have some nerves and emotions… and I think that’s the whole point, to allow the players to go through those emotions.”

The games will take place on the 25th and 26th of April.
