Barnsley Hospital Charity raised funds for its breast care appeal through a shark dive event at the Blue Planet Aquarium in Hull.
The initiative aims to generate £100,000 for facility improvements.
Nine supporters of the charity took part in the first dive, completing mandatory Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) training before swimming among sand tiger sharks, rays, and tropical fish.

Each participant had a fundraising target of £500, with several people exceeding £1,000.
Jane Mills, Charity Development Officer, said: “The bravery of participants and the support received has been incredible. Many participants described the experience as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to challenge themselves while supporting an important cause.”
The funds will be used to refurbish the hospital’s breast care unit, which treats over 7,000 patients annually, including 250 undergoing cancer treatment.
She added: “It’s not your standard fundraising event, but it’s certainly a memorable way to give back. It takes real courage and determination.”
Planned upgrades include improvements to waiting areas, enhanced consultation rooms, and the addition of artwork and calming ceiling tiles to create a more welcoming environment for patients during stressful visits.
Jeswin, a Practitioner in the Endoscopy Unit, said: “Every day, I see how vital our hospital’s services are to our community. This was a way for me to challenge myself and show support in a very different way.”
The appeal has gained corporate backing, with Premier Foods in Barnsley selecting it as its charity of the year.
Two employees of Premier Foods in Barnsley, Jane and Jordan took part in the dive.
Jane said: “Many of my family and friends have benefited from the hospital’s breast care services. This is my way of giving back.”
Due to high demand, another shark dive is scheduled for this weekend, with more events planned later in the year.
The charity’s upcoming fundraising efforts include skydives, wing walks, and charity walks, ensuring multiple ways for supporters to get involved.
