Sheffield Wednesday owner and Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri hasn’t paid his players’ wages in March, due to financial constraints.

A statement claims that it’s down to “significant sums of money owed to the chairmen’s businesses”, disrupting the club’s cashflow.

Fan trust has been on a steep decline since they were placed in their second transfer embargo in twelve months in November, over debts to HMRC.

Sheffield Wednesday fan Sam Burton criticised the club’s ownership, and thinks that it’s time to sell.

“It’s been the same for at least the last couple of seasons now.

“Even if all is going well on the pitch, a new issue with finances quickly brings supporters and the team’s morale down” ,he said.

“His ownership hasn’t been all bad for the last ten years because we’ve had our highs as well and lows. But I think now is his time to go.”

The club received a 6 point deduction in 2020 being found guilty of breaking EFL spending rules.

Then in 2023, Chansiri asked Wednesday fans to raise £2 million in order to pay his debts off, with the club escaping relegation on the final day of the season.

“This is someone who’s asked fans to cover his debts. That’s not someone who inspires confidence in their ownership” Burton added.

“He needs to properly demonstrate that he understands the club and what it means to fans with what he says from here on in.”

The SWFC Supporters Trust issued a statement on Monday, demanding “immediate action and a comprehensive explanation from the club’s leadership.”

Ian Bennett, chair of the trust, also urged all other Sheffield Wednesday fan groups to get involved.

“The chairman’s failure to address the situation only deepens the fans’ unease and threatens to erode the trust and loyalty that have been the backbone of Sheffield Wednesday for generations.” he said.

In the club statement released earlier this week, Wednesday were adamant that the problem will be solved soon.

“The chairman is working hard to resolve this situation at the earliest possible opportunity and in the meantime thanks everyone for their patience and understanding.”
