On Easter Monday, Friends of the Porter Valley will hold their annual duck race at Endcliffe Park.

The race will start at 2 pm and will raise money for a new Petanque court at Bingham Park. This will be the first Pentaque pitch in Sheffield.

Friends of the Porter Valley is a charity in Sheffield which focuses on the conservation, preservation and restoration of Sheffield areas.

The Easter Duck Race is one of the many fundraising events held throughout the year. It has taken place nearly every year since 2009 and draws thousands of spectators each Easter.

Glynis Jones, 75, member of the Friends of the Porter Valley committee said: “It attracts a whole range of people, lots of families with children come because their children love it.”

Using a unique launching tower, the FoPV Duck race releases 2,500 numbered plastic ducks into the River Porter. T

hey float down the river for approximately 450 metres and are captured in a specially designed finish line. The winners are then checked and verified by the FoPV Duck Race Committee.

All prizes for winners are donated from the community.

Some of the race prizes this year include: 2 match tickets for Sheffield United, 2 concert tickets for Abbeydale singers, 2 bottles of wine from The Times Wine Club and a £100 voucher from Pagets builders merchants.

Glynis Jones added: “ It’s a very friendly event, it’s just lots of people getting together. Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves one way or another.”

The duck race raises around £10,000 a year on average which contributes towards a conservation project in the city.

Past projects have raised money towards the Shepherd Wheel, and Forge Dam restorations and also Bingham Park renovations.

Last year FoPV raised money to replace a wooden toad statue in the playground at Endcliffe Park. This enabled them to build a replacement statue made of metal that should last for thousands of years.

There will also be crafts from local Sheffield businesses which will include textile crafts, face painting, jewellery and artwork.

You can buy ducks at Endcliffe Park, Forge Dam Cafes and on their website. An individual duck costs £1 and a family of six ducks costs £5. Duck sales will close at 2 PM on the 21st of April.
