The Leadmill has lost its appeal to the eviction notice served by its landlord.

In a statement last night, the venue confirmed it will need to vacate the premises in three months.

They said: “We’re truly devastated by this outcome, but we also know hand on heart that we did everything possible to stop the Leadmill being evicted.

“We have poured our energy, time, love and determination into this fight and we’re immensely proud of our team and the community that stood by us.”

This decision allows its landlord, Electric Group, to take control of the empty building. The group have previously emphasised its intention to keep running the space as a music venue.

All current staff will still be replaced, and as a result, over 70 people will lose their job.

The venue also said in last night’s statement: “We are devastated, but not defeated.

“This is not the end of the Leadmill’s spirit – it’s a call to action for everyone who believes in the importance of independent culture. We will regroup, rebuild and continue.”

The iconic music venue opened in Sheffield town centre in 1980 and has hosted artists such as the Arctic Monkeys, Coldplay, and Oasis, amongst many others.

This morning, Liam Gallagher responded to the statement on Twitter, calling the decision ‘scandalous’.

The Leadmill said it will be hosting a series of ‘farewell events and celebrations’, and reiterated its motive to keep fighting for independent music in Sheffield.

They confirmed on their social media channels this afternoon that they’ll be reaching out to find artists with the hope of making these final weeks ‘the best in 45 years’.
