Local pub honour football pioneer from Sheffield

by Rosie Wood | May 22, 2025 | Community, Sport, Top Story - Home Page Lead, Watch

A man stood in front of a blue plaque on a building.

The Frog and Parrot pub on Division Street recently unveiled a blue plaque outside the building to honour John Tasker, who is known to be a pioneer of modern football.

They found out that his engineering workshop had once been on the premises in the 1800s – a place that paved the way for electrical lighting to develop.

In 1878, Tasker enabled the very first floodlit football match at Bramall Lane. This changed the game forever, meaning football matches could be played in the evenings too, once it had gone dark.

From here, electrical street lighting was also rolled out in some areas of Sheffield.

The plaque was provided by Sheffield Home of Football and marks the site of Tasker’s former workshop.
