The emergency closure of a South Yorkshire level crossing has been granted following a rise in dangerous misuse on the tracks.
Network Rail applied for the Wilthorpe footpath crossing to be closed following misuse described as “truly shocking”.
Andy Cunningham, Network Rail route level crossing manager said: “The footage from Wilthorpe is truly shocking and the worst I’ve seen for misuse and disregard for level crossing safety.
“People are repeatedly risking their own and other people’s lives. The crossing has limited sighting of approaching trains and we’re fortunate not to have had a fatality.”

An emergency closure order has been granted for the crossing, approved by the Barnsley Council last week.
Within CCTV footage released by Network Rail, people can be seen lying on the tracks, posing for photographs and holding gates shut to trap others on the crossing.
Mr Cunningham said: “Given the evidence and the severity of the situation, we believe that closing the crossing is the most responsible course of action to prevent any potential accidents or injuries.”
In the last eight weeks, Network Rail say they have dealt with 15 incidents of misuse on the tracks, including crossing whilst a train was coming or after the automated warning was sound.

The emergency closure order has been granted for three weeks, with Network Rail officials seeking a six-month temporary traffic regulation order when this comes to an end.
Mr Cunningham said: “We understand that this decision may disrupt daily routines, and we’re sorry for any inconvenience caused, but the safety of the public is our top priority.”
