Sheffield has appointed its first black woman wearing a hijab as its 128th Right Worshipful Lord Mayor.

Councillor Safiya Saeed, made history, being inaugurated at Sheffield City Council’s annual general meeting.

She said: “I stand before you today in great pride and joy, it is more than an honour, I am honoured to be the first black woman wearing a hijab to take this role.

“Today, this gives me the platform to grow and give back to my community.”

Councillor Saeed’s proud family travelled from Somaliland, her home country, to support the ceremony.

While being a councillor, she took on many roles, including Deputy Lord Mayor and Chair of the North East Local Area Committee.

As well as being a single mother of five, she is also the founder of Reach up Youth, an initiative dedicated to providing social education and opportunities for young people, particularly those from ethnic minority backgrounds.

Councillor Saeed aims to make Sheffield a place where businesses, charities and locals can work together and grow to build a future of collaboration and prosperity.

She said: “I came to Sheffield in 1985, and this city has truly become my home – a place where I have always felt I belong.

“I want every voice, no matter how quiet, to feel heard in the heart of this city.”
