Doncaster musical act DN0 are set to perform at this year’s Glastonbury music festival.
The duo comprises of singer David Junior Walusimbi, who goes by the stage name Junior, and rapper Lewis Russell, better known as Balby Local.
Since 2020, they’ve been active in South Yorkshire’s music scene, mixing together different genres like dance, rap, RnB and garage.
Mr Walusimbi, 25, said: “Personally, this performance at Glastonbury is a bucket list thing for me. When we look back down the line, this’ll be our biggest contribution to Doncaster’s music and culture.”
The pair applied for the opportunity last year through WaterBear College of Music in Sheffield, where Mr Russell is an artist-student.
As their music’s quite different from the mainstream indie and rock music that Sheffield has to offer, they were shocked to see they had been selected.
Mr Russell, 26, said: “We didn’t feel too confident that we’d get picked and we just put it out there. We got the email one day and I didn’t really believe it, I thought it was just one of those scam emails you get.”
The duo have earned recognition from BBC Radio Sheffield while also performing at various local music venues like The Leadmill, Corporation and festivals such as Tramlines and Mother Fhungus.
They also run a community interest company called GSD in Doncaster, running projects with the help of National Lottery and Doncaster Council.
Through music they help young, under-represented communities by focusing on song writing, performance, fashion, and personal development, all while promoting key life skills such as teamwork and communication.
Mr Russell said: “Performing at Glastonbury and being from Doncaster, we’re able to show young kids that it doesn’t really matter where you’re from.
“We’re leading by example. Now, we can meet important people, get those industry links and try and push our youths down that path but a lot quicker than we’ve been ourselves.
Fans will be treated to tracks like ‘Freedom’, ‘Undercover Lover’, ‘Complications’ and many more. The setlist will also include some unreleased songs from their future projects.
They will perform at the Croissant Neuf stage at the music festival from 25-29 June, with 20-minute sets on the weekdays and half hour sets on the weekends.
