DJ AG hosted a livestreamed open street set up on the steps of Sheffield Town Hall last Friday, attracting thousands of viewers online and in-person.

The set ran from 4pm to 8pm, with big names such as internet sensation John McClure, and Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Safiya Saeed, attending the event.

This was the second year in a row that DJ AG hosted a live set in Sheffield in honour to provide a platform for local artists to perform, including Sheffield-based band, Shugacoma.

Kian Welsh, 19, Guitarist for Shugacoma, said: “Getting the chance to play in front of a crowd and hearing people sing along to what you’re playing is a feeling you can’t get elsewhere.

“Initially I was quite scared, but as it went on I started to thrive in the space a lot more.”

Shugacoma were formed only a month ago, whilst studying at Waterbear The College of Music in Sheffield.

Waterbear have recently launched a new music scholarship with DJ AG in aim to support emerging artists.

Mr Welsh added: “What AG is doing with these events is giving smaller artists a platform to showcase their ability, which is very important for local artists like us.

“The good thing about being part of a great music college is that it gets you opportunities that push you like this one.”

Shugacoma are set to release their first single in mid-April as they aim to “put a foot in the door” into the music industry.

Mr Welsh also raised the importance for events like these to be held in the North, calling for more eyes to be on the North of England in the music industry.

“There’s a mindset that if you’re not down south, you’re not going to make it.

“The ability to showcase what we have up North and in Sheffield is an amazing opportunity and one of the best things we can do to keep the music industry alive.”

Other performers on set included Junglist Alliance with guest MC Top Cat, and the “Sheffield All Stars” (K-Dot, Aziza Jaye, Coco, and Lavelle), which formed a festival of Sheffield music.
