A Sheffield restaurant has been raising money for Palestinians in need of medical aid, with a series of special dining events.

South Street Kitchen, located in Park Hill flats on South Street, opened in March 2018 with an aim to create a sustainable and welcoming eatery for the local community.

Since opening eight years ago, owners Tim Jenkins and Rachel Cornish have worked with Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) to raise funds towards healthcare in the Middle East.

The kitchen will be hosting Palestinian menu nights on 20, 21 and 28 March. For each person booked in, £10 will go to MAP.

The menu includes traditional meals from Palestine such as herbed labneh, roasted cauliflower shawarma and warm bulgur salad with zhoug dressing.

Medical Aid for Palestinians have been supporting the country for over 40 years, but in the last decade the need for aid in the Middle East has only increased. They aim to provide Palestinians with access to health services and build knowledge and skills to address health problems within the country.

Owner Tim Jenkins said, “Times are particularly tough right now so raising money to get healthcare to Palestinians in desperate need of it is super important for us to do.”

In September 2019, working alongside MAP, Tim went out to Palestine and completed a cycle through the country to raise additional funds.

Speaking about the experience, Tim said, “It was fantastic to meet people in Palestine, share their food with them, share their stories, it was inspiring.”

Over the last eight years, South Street Kitchen has raised over £5000 for MAP. The Palestinian evenings attract a range of people from many different backgrounds all coming together in solidarity for the cause and creating a safe environment for Palestine support in Sheffield.

Tim added: “We’re keen to spread the word, Palestinian food is really delicious so it’s an opportunity to eat great food but also make a contribution.”
