A chess club which aims to get people offline and away from technology is about to begin in Sheffield.

The event which is for “absolutely everybody” will start on the 20th May at Sheffield City Cathedral café from 6pm to 9pm.

Charles Woodhall, 20, joint founder of the organisation said: “The aim is to get people offline, off their phones, technology and social media in a world where people are just so obsessed with it.

“It’s the only way they socialise.”

The events are aimed for all abilities of chess players with Mr Woodhall himself learning to play.

They will take place every alternate Wednesday with further events taking place at Kapital Sheffield starting 31 May from 6pm.

Chess, coffee and cake

He said: “Whether it’s the 12 year old with his father that wants to build his chess ability, to the elderly gentleman who is struggling to socialise and has nothing to do on the Wednesday afternoon.”

During the evening, chess players pay £10 to participate in a game but spectators are welcome to come along for free.

There are other games available as well such as Connect four and people are welcome to bring their own games along too.

Mr Woodhall said: “We’ve already had quite a few people say that they would love to come, which is an amazing response.”

The socials are very low pressure which makes them different to other chess community groups across Sheffield.

The event is also run by Tristan Large who is an experienced chess player himself.
