Council leader Tom Hunt lost his position in the Sheffield City Council after the Green Party Councillor, Andrew Davies, won by a small margin.

The race was incredibly tight with 73 votes between Green and Labour, with 2,794 and 2,721, respectively. Reform UK followed behind with over 900 votes.

The winning Green Party candidate, Andrew Davies, said: “I had nothing to lose and everything to gain. I do feel for Tom, but I am really excited to have been chosen by the ward and the residents.

“The margin of victory would not have been possible without the national picture. People are choosing hope over hatred and division. People are choosing to stand up for marginalised communities like Palestinians.”

The Green Party has swept the elections in Sheffield; out of 25 seats announced, the Greens have taken 10, Reform has nine, the Liberal Democrats have five, and Labour managed to hold on to one seat.

Mr Davies added: “We’ve seen so far that many Reform-run councils have been performing very poorly and not keeping up pledges they made to get into office. I hope that people will see Reform for what they are before the next general election.”

Mr Hunt has been the Leader of the Council since May 2023, but the role will now be reassigned by the end of the count.

When approached for comment, Tom Hunt declined to speak.

The count nears its end, with dual-vacancy wards Beighton and Firth Park remaining to take up the final 4 seats.
