The Speech & Language Therapy Clinic hosted its third Dysarthria Awareness Day to help people understand the importance of kindness to people affected by motor speech disorders.
Dysarthria causes nervous system damage that weakens and disrupts control of the muscles responsible for speech, however it does not affect intelligence.
The Speech & Language Therapy Clinic holds a group the University of Sheffield for people with dysarthria twice a week, where clients help students learn to deliver speech and language therapy.
Paul Ryan, who was affected by dysarthria after suffering a stroke said: “I’d rather people say to me, can you repeat that? Then pretending to know what I am saying.”
