Tennis courts in a South Yorkshire mining town are getting their first upgrade in more than 30 years.

The courts in Mexborough, which were used by miners in the 1920s, are going to be restored for the first time since 1990.

Residents and users are thrilled that the courts will be upgraded, as they have faced damage and wear over the years.

Chris Skelton, Chairman of Mexborough Tennis Club, said: “Everyone is so pleased about this project going ahead. The court surface was in a really bad condition, causing bad bounces and was becoming unplayable, especially for local league matches.

“We have never had floodlights at the club, so this is particularly exciting for everyone using the courts. It means we can play all year round in the evenings which is fantastic.”

The work began two weeks ago and is set to finish early July.

The Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation (CISWO) charity has partly funded the court resurfacing, new flood lights and fencing for the welfare centre.

Mr Skelton said: “Working alongside Mexborough Miners Welfare in order to bring this project to fruition is a massive boost for the area, and means people have access to tennis facilities without having to travel to the Doncaster or Sheffield areas.”

Alongside CISWO, Mexborough Miners Welfare have applied for funding from various sources, including the FCC Communities Foundation, CISWO and Sport England.

They have also raised funds themselves by carrying out event nights and a Crowdfunding page.

Mexborough was home to several coal mines surrounding the town.

The welfare sports and social club first opened in the 1920s to give colliery workers and their families a chance to take part in leisure activities. As well as the tennis courts there are outdoor pitches for cricket and football at their New Oxford Road site.

Chris Skelton said: “We are looking at approximately eight weeks to complete the project. This includes curing time for the tarmac and drying time for the painting of the courts. We should be able to use them in July, weather permitting!”
