WATCH: Student raising awareness for lost teaching compensation

by Philip Lamb | May 22, 2026 | News, Top Story - Home Page Lead, University, Watch | 0 comments

A University of Sheffield student teamed up with the Sheffield branch of the University and College Union to be a voice to students trying to claim compensation for missed teaching due to strikes.

The strikes came due to a disagreement with the Union and the University Executive Board over voluntary redundancies to staff. The University has said that they are “committed to avoiding compulsory redundancies” and are working closely with schools to minimise impact on students.

Louis Josa, was a part of a small group who wrote an open letter to University Vice Chancellor Koen Lamberts. Which has since received over 865 signatures from students.

Mr Josa said: “Students are still at risk of having more industrial action, which is obviously a last resort. As far as I know, their strike mandate is still open, so we could get more strikes in the near future.”
