Wards to watch as counts continue

Almondbury:

Batley East:

Batley East is another one to watch after having a rocky 12 months, with a by-election taking place back in August due to former councillor Fazila Loonat being jailed. Last years election was a close call, with several recounts that saw just a mere 14 votes separating Labour and the conservatives, with Labour’s Habiban Zaman taking the victory.

Denby Dale:

Denby Dale could also be a close one with just 5% of the vote separating Labour who were victorious and the Conservatives last year.

Barnsley count has begun

All of the ballots have been verified and the count has begun.

Sarah Norman, CEO of Barnsley council and the local election returning officer, said: "I think it's all gone very smoothly, we're slightly ahead of schedule. We thought we might not start counting till one o'clock so from my point of view, that's a result."

Rockingham Labour candidate speaks on hopes for results

Sherry Holling is ‘quietly confident’ and hopeful to retain the only Labour seat left in Rockingham ward Barnsley.

She said: “With regards to Rockingham I think people have learnt that having an independent councillor or a conservative councillor does not get them what they want.

I think they’ve realised and they’re coming back to Labour.”

Nicola Sumner is the current Labour councillor who famously won through a coin toss. She is now running in Central ward.

There is one Reform seat and one Independent seat in Rockingham.
