A team of abseilers are set to scale one of Sheffield Hallam’s university buildings in a bid to raise money for The Children’s Hospital.

‘Team Theo’s Abseil’, named after the Children’s Hospital’s Charity mascot, will take place on Sunday from 10am until 4pm with people abseiling down the 140ft Owen building.

The supporters involved have already raised more than £10,000 of their £15,000 goal.

One of the abseilers, Lauren Morton, 35, said: “I want to raise money for a great charity, it’s something to test myself a little because I am terrified of heights.

“I’m expecting to be absolutely petrified while doing it but when I get to the bottom I’ll think yes, I’ve done it. It’s an accomplishment. I might not be able to work within the health sector but this is a way of contributing to it.”

It’s not Lauren’s first abseil as back in 2016 she completed an abseil off of a building in the city centre for Cavendish Cancer Care.

Lauren has managed to raise more than £300 herself for this year’s abseil.

Lauren said: “I know a lot of people that have been there, myself included when I was little, my daughter when she was younger as well and they do a lot of good work.

“I think at some point in our lives we’re all in need of children’s hospitals, either for ourselves when we’re young or for our children.”

The abseil is just one of many fundraising events held by Team Theo across the spring and summer months with other events such as skydives, a 10k run and a 5-a-side tournament.

The abseil was due to take place on April 16 but had to be postponed due to unforseen circumstances.

Registration is still open for those who want to join the event and a minimum of £100 is required for those wanting to fundraise.

You need to be aged 16 to get involved with this event and under 18s would need a guardian with them on the day.

Anyone wanting to watch the event can go down on Sunday and view the abseil from Hallam Square.  Another fundraising abseil is set to take place this October.
