The Academy Theatre in Birdwell, Barnsley is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year with lots of exciting plans.

The theatre first opened its door back in 2004 under the leadership of Geoff Whitfield, helped by his wife and daughter, Sue and Julie.

Ms Julie Whitfield, Theatre Manager said: “It’s very exciting. I’m chuffed to have gotten this far, after such a long slog through the years of Covid.”

The site is also home to Chatterbox Nursery and Take Two Performing Arts Academy.

Julie, of Pitt Street, Birdwell has been leading the operations of the theatre alongside step-mum Sue since her dad Geoff died suddenly in October 2020.

She said: “He’d be so proud. It would’ve been so nice for him to see everything going off, but he’s up there I’m sure. He’d be proud of all the kids, he always was.

“We’ve got some great shows coming up, Six, Annie and our traditional annual pantomime, which this year is Jack and the Beanstalk. We’re all very excited and re-motivated for this momentous year.”

Tickets for the upcoming shows at the Academy are on sale now and can be purchased via their website or by calling 01226 744442.
