Barnsley Football Club have sacked their manager Darrell Clarke after just nine months in charge.

The decision comes following the side’s recent form, having lost seven out of the past 11 matches, dropping out of the playoff positions and into 10th place.

Chairman Neerav Parekh said via the club website; “Darrell has worked extremely hard to try and get the team competitive and pushing for promotion.

“Unfortunately, we find ourselves eight points away from the play-offs and feel that a change is needed”.

Conor Hourihane has been placed in interim charge for the final 10 games. The assistant coach and former Barnsley captain will be supported by coaches Jon Stead, Martin Devaney and Tom Harban.

Clarke made a good start as Barnsley boss after four successive wins over Christmas and New Year left them in fifth place. However five losses out of the next six games ended up being the crucial factor in Clarke’s dismissal.

Barnsley become the 13th League One side to roll the managerial dice since the season’s start in August.

Sporting director Mladen Sormaz added; “Whilst a list of replacements has been identified, we will take some time to ensure the next appointment is the right one.

“We believe Conor can help to create enough bounce to keep us fighting for the top six until the end of the season”.
